[November 14, 2009 »12:35a ] An email I got from my cousin a week back (OMG JULU SO CUTEEEEEE~) Hallo cuzzies! We miss U guys tons!! How is everyone? Julien was invited to his first ever Halloween party yesterday. (After a whole week of being ill, poor thing.) It was a babies Halloween party, so the babies couldn't eat any candy but all the parents did....haha! Zer & two Wong Mels....I tried to make pumpkin pie but it was a miserable failure! Too soggy!! Sighz I can't bake...... I couldn't find Juju a costume (Halloween is not that big yet in France...it's starting to get popular but you can't find costumes for kids easily in stores) And I am HOPELESS at sewing n didn't have enough time to make a costume (I didn't think a white sheet with 2 holes for eyes would cut it!) So I went to Chinatown and got him a little chinese outfit. (Which will double up for CNY when we go back to SG...hopefully he won't outgrow it!) We can't wait to see all of U then. Well, believe it or not we are still settling in. There is a room full of unpacked boxes cos our apartment here is 3 times smaller than in Istanbul! So u can imagine the squeeze.... Cookie seems happy enough though.....I'm surprised how easily he adjusted to being a "city" dog. (We were living in a huge place near the forest when we were in Istanbul...lots of trees, grass, a few cars) I guess chasing pigeons and sniffing homeless winos is fun too! The strangest thing though is that in many parks in Paris, dogs are not allowed, even on a leash. And in some apartment buildings, you are allowed to have dogs but not children! I am NOT kidding. I don't think that people should say things like "I'll love you forever" [October 27, 2009 »1:16a ] I don’t think people should make promises they are probably not going to keep. It bothers me when people say they will wait as long as it takes for another person and a few months later they have completely moved on. Don’t say someone is your everything. Don’t say that no one will ever love a person as much as you do. When it comes to love, I don’t see why there is such a need to go to the extreme. Why can’t it just be good enough to say things like, “At this very moment, I am so incredibly happy I know you because your existence complements mine quite nicely,” or “My whole body craves to be with you, because even just sitting with you is the most lovely situation I can presently fathom”? Thursday, July 16, 2009 marriage. again.   ok lunch with bestie brought up a very screwed-up, cynical, but very, very interesting viewpoint on marriage. that we should go in with our eyes open and expect our spouse to cheat on you. ok first, my definition of marriage is that it is a lifetime commitment. many now no longer see marriage as a lifetime thing, but in theory it is and will always be. so what's the point of making a lifetime commitment? it is an expression of love and dedication to your significant other, an action to represent the "undying" love. it signifies a lifetime spent together, sharing each other's lives, taking on responsibilities for someone else. it also means a dedication to your significant other for the rest of your life, no matter what happens. as the vows go, in sickness or in health, and i don't know the rest. bottom-line is that regardless of what happens, you'll always be partners for life, till death do us part. thus, i say it's a very screwed-up point of view to expect your spouse to cheat on you because marriage is about making an lifetime commitment to someone, no matter what the circumstances. both parties should expect their spouses to be faithful and loyal, especially after having made a lifetime commitment. it defeats the entire purpose of marriage, and destroys everything that marriage stands for. but i do not disagree with that viewpoint. life is about managing expectations. if you expect too much but you get less than expected you end up feeling disappointed. but of course expecting too little, especially from yourself, means not pushing hard enough. so if you enter into a marriage with the expectation of a cheating spouse, it is true that when, or if, it happens you won't be as disappointed than if you went into it believing in the theory of marriage. but won't that expectation weigh down the relationship? when you see your spouse with a member of the opposite sex, particularly if he/she is hot, you'll always question yourself. and if it gets bad enough, you'll question your spouse which puts a strain on the relationship. when your spouse seems cold and distant when they're just having a bad day, you'll start being paranoid and think the worst, that they're cheating. what is the point of the marriage then? and now turn the gun on ourselves. if we go in with the expectation of a cheating spouse, wouldn't we also expect ourselves to cheat? i'd expect myself to cheat if i go in thinking my spouse would cheat. it is human nature to defend ourselves. some argue that love can overcome that, anything for that matter of fact, but i won't go into that. hence, we would find any reason to cheat on our spouses with such expectation. what kind of relationship is that then? conversely, if you believe in the theory of marriage and do not expect your spouse to cheat, you learn to trust your spouse in whatever they do. it gives the relationship a solid foundation on which it can be built on. i think it'd give more meaning to the marriage, with both parties' minds not bogged down by the expectation of a cheating spouse. it makes for a happier union. but of course it could be blind faith, where one or both parties use the trust in the marriage to cheat behind their backs, knowing that the other party wouldn't question or probe. in this superficial world, where the emphasis on looks and money is ever-increasing, trust is a premium that many cannot afford. as highlighted in a previous post, people are now getting married for reasons besides love, skewing our perception of marriage and true love in the process. granted, there should be many reasons for marriage, but i think love will have to be a strong motivating factor, which is currently decreasing in emphasis in today's society. i still think it is an awfully screwed-up point of view, because it defeats the entire purpose of marriage. but nevertheless, a very, very thought-provoking one. all of this only serves to decrease my already-fleeting belief in marriage. p.s. i can't believe i actually wrote some of the shit on love above. i just tried to best put it into words. some of it sounds very cliched but i think you know what i mean. 1/ read reply
